Writing Adventure in Richmond
Amy and I had a fantastic time at the Witold Krull Postcard Contest (microfiction) in Richmond, Va.
The Witold Krull Postcard Contest is an annual event in which writers submit microfiction pieces that could fit on the back of a postcard (approximately 75-125 words). This year’s prompt asked all entries to 1. Include an apology in their submission, and 2. Mention Hotel Greene, the sponsor/presenter of the contest.
I was lucky enough to be a finalist this year. At the event, I got to read my piece with this cool cat watching over my shoulder, then we enjoyed cake & indoor mini-golf at the Hotel Greene! If you ever get to Richmond, go play mini-golf there. The course is in a 1930s Art Deco hotel. One hole runs under a bed, another goes onto a pool table, etc.
Amy and I both had a blast. We also went to the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, a must-stop for any visit to Richmond.
Anyway, here’s my finalist entry, in case you want to read it. Probably helps if you hear this spoken in a posh British accent!

Dear Esteemed Mayor,
I most earnestly apologize for my recent behavior in your fine American city. On behalf of His Majesty, King George V, I travelled to Virginia to apprehend one Thomas Roth, a blackguard of the lowest order. I tracked said reprobate to the Hotel Greene, a caravansary in the heart of Richmond. Alas, the incorrigible heel spotted my trademark bowler and attempted to clout me with a nine-iron! Much was broken during the donnybrook–including the bellhop’s nose. I regret my ungentlemanly actions and hope you will lift the injunction barring me from your fair community.
Sincerely,
Agent Ian Higginbotham
